Wednesday, June 2nd 2010, saw the AGM of PRiM followed by a conference led by Samuel Sender of EDHEC on "What are the Risk Management Implications of UCITS 'Hedge Funds'?" . The new board and President were elected and the full board can be found on the PRiM website news section.

The outgoing president, Michael May, thanked his board colleagues for their support and contribution during a momentous 3 years for the risk management profession and wished the new board and its president, Marco Zwick well during their coming mandate. Michael, who will remain on the board, also thanked outgoing members of the board - Alain Bastin, Pascal Denis, Bernard Herman, Vafa Moayed and Stephan Schmitz for their contributions. Each one of them of them has marked the life of PRiM and helped shaped the association that exists now and Michael ran through many of those valuable contributions. In particular, he praised Alain Bastin,  founder member and a former president, for his loyalty and support over the years.

The conference - the presentation slides of which are also now on the PRiM website (link) - was preceded by a presentation of the first PRiM Luxembourg School of Finance Scholarship for €3,000 to Gundars OSTROVSKIS . The winning essay will appear in the next edition of the quarterly PRiM Risk Newsletter, due for publication in early July.

Although it is likely that major financial service providers faced with serious financial difficulties over the past two years had highly qualified risk managers, the fate they suffered raises many issues regarding the effectiveness of risk management today. What practical changes should be considered within the profession in order to reduce the likelihood of similar problems recurring?

Essays should be submitted as MS-Word documents written in English, containing a maximum of 2,000 words. All essays must be received by PRiM before midnight on January 29th, 2010. Please submit your essay to: info@prim.lu In the "Subject" line of your E-mail, please mention "PRiM Scholarship".

2009-10-02 / Publication of the PRiM Risk Newsletter No 19 - Pricing Risk

Dear all,

PRiM is pleased to announce the publication of our latest newsletter on Pricing Risk.

Pricing risk is not very problematic, if a fund is only pricing liquid securities that are listed on a major stock exchange in normal market conditions. Since the implementation of UCITS III, however, funds increasingly invest in financial instruments that are traded outside of exchanges (i.e., over the counter, OTC), which has resulted in higher levels of pricing risk. This trend appears to pose a significant challenge for fund managers, fund administrators and custodians, as well as for regulators. While the financial crisis has ruined the appetite of some fund managers and investors for exotic assets, others continue to search for new types of instruments, the risks of which may not be completely known. New instrument types or even known instruments that are not well defined or understood and illiquid assets (such as private equity or real estate) can lead to major issues in pricing. The question then arises, who accepts the responsibility for resolving such issues effectively?

To view the newsletter, please follow this link or visit our website www.prim.lu / Newsletters

Long before this official recognition of a successful collaboration, a very high quality annual training course has been proposed, featuring two eminent guest lecturers, Professor Philippe Jorion and Professor Georges Hübner in direct preparation for the GARP FRM examination.

The 2009 edition of this programme has been launched and the courses will start early in October according to the following schedule:

Preparation workshops with Professor Hübner:

October 8 - 9:   FRM Review on Capital Markets

FRM seminar with Professor Jorion:

October 12 - 16:   Mastering Advanced Techniques and Complex Issues in Financial Risk Management

The president and board of PRiM warmly encourage PRiM members to join this highly recommended programme. In these difficult times where efficient risk management is a major asset for the survival of a company, well-trained staff are especially valuable.

The courses are open for bookings until 11 September 2009. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn from two exceptional lecturers!

2008-09-19 / OCTOBER 13TH: How will the current market turbulences impact the use of VaR ?

The current turmoil has taken its toll on some of the most prestigious financial institutions. After years of balance sheet expansion on the one hand and of massive investment in VaR based measurement tools on the other hand, have the VaR concept, its calculation and the way it is used led financial institutions to excessive level of comfort? Professor Philippe Jorion and Mr. Con Keating will debate this question.

This conference will be of interest not only to the risk management community, but to anyone involved in the assessment, supervision and management of financial risk. It is a highly topical question facing board directors, senior executives and investors alike at a time when calculation of risk positions is proving critical to survival. This is an opportunity to hear two highly respected individuals debate a topic relevant to us all.

Date: October 13, 2008 from 17:30 to 19:00 (followed by a cocktail)
Venue: Centre de Conférence, Chambre de Commerce, Luxembourg-Kirchberg

2008-06-30 / PRiM Risk Newsletter No 14 - INFORMATION RISK

Recent incidents, such as the breach of banking secrecy in Liechtenstein and the accusations against Deutsche Telekom regarding data protection have led to an increased awareness of information risk. Although information risk is often associated with information technology (IT) risk, it encompasses many other aspects that are not directly related to IT. Issues such as the quality and accuracy of information content, the availability of the right information at the right time and the protection of sensitive information illustrate the vastness of information risk. For Luxembourg financial institutions with their significant roles in international financial markets and the strict banking secrecy laws that they must respect, the effective management of information risk is a conditio sine qua non. 2008-05-18 / Microfinance & Risk Management - an opportunity

Dear Members and Friends,

Attached is a briefing document on the major risk managment initiative being promoted in accordance with governmental priorities by the ATTF, who have called upon PRiM to provide support and assistance.

There is a clear need in terms of risk management from many strongly-growing microfinance institutions (MFIs) and this programme is designed to assist with those needs. A serious programme is being developed which needs experienced risk managers willing to share their time and knowledge with these institutions. To date, only a small number of members has stepped forward to assist, but the effectiveness of this initiative depends upon the vital support of members of Luxembourg risk management functions.

You are therefore invited to contact either Michael May at PRiM or Joséé Thyes at the ATTF if you interested in understanding how you can help in the future. The personal experience of sharing knowledge in the context of helping a key sector for assisting those is developing countries will be highly satisfying.

The attached briefing document provides further information on this initiative and its future goals.

Thank you in advance for your interest and support.

2008-01-07 / PRiM and the International Bankers Forum

Cooperation between IBF Luxembourg and PRiM (Luxembourg Association for risk management Professionals)

We are pleased to announce that the Board of IBF Luxembourg and PRiM have decided to cooperate in the future. Our websites shall be cross linked and members of the respective organisations shall have the opportunity to join the events of the other organisation. We are also planning joint events.

In 1989, International Bankers Forum (IBF) Luxembourg was founded under Luxembourgish law as a non-profit organisation. At present IBF Luxembourg represents about 120 members from more than 50 different financial institutions and has established itself as a firm member of the financial centre of Luxembourg.

The statutory aim of International Bankers Forum is to strengthen the economic, social and personal contacts within its banking community. IBF addresses members of the managerial staff of international banks and other companies related to the financial sector. IBF Luxembourg especially aims to contribute towards the promotion and development of the financial centre of Luxembourg.

By organizing conferences and workshops as well as cultural events, IBF members shall learn about new developments in the banking and related financial sector as well as get into contact with each other. Networking in the community is one of IBFs major assets.

As both associations have the primary goal to provide a Luxembourg-based forum for networking and exchange of information between professionals of the financial centre, this cooperation should allow members of both associations to enhance their networking further and join other Luxembourg professional associations through conferences, joint working groups and other activities.

2008-01-02 / Happy New Year!

To all members and friends of PRiM:

We should like to wish you a happy and successful 2008. After a 2007 that has been full of drama, 2008 will certainly bring its own challenges and opportunities and PRiM is looking forward to making its own contribution to the Luxembourg financial sector.

Members should have received a message today with an automated membership invoice included, giving the new single annual subscription rate (€50) and details of where subscriptions are to be paid. We should be very grateful if you would arrange for your renewals to be paid promptly so we can minimise administration, as the association is run entirely by volunteers.

Please encourage any colleagues who are directly or indirectly involved in risk management-related work to join and participate actively in the life of the association. We also encourage you to distribute the PRiM Risk Newsletter widely (whether by simple e-mail or through your company's intranet) so that we reach as broad a cross-section of the financial centre as possible.

We look forward to meeting you at our events during the year, a number of which are in preparation by PRiM alone or with other Luxembourg associations.

The Board of PRiM

We are now looking to reinforce our small editorial panel and are constantly looking for contributors. Members interested in joining the panel and/or contributing (or even in suggesting suitable contributors or interviewees) are invited to contact the newsletter editor Paul Kleinbart (pkleinbart@fasttraining.eu).
